The gap closure program starts on 06.06.2024. This particularly promotes the synergetic development of private and subsidized expansion. It is aimed at municipalities with areas that are not or have not been fully developed in a planned, ongoing or completed private-sector expansion and that would probably not be developed in the future due to their small size.

Decision support for gap closure program
If the following three statements apply, an application for the Gap Closure Program should be examined in detail:
Existing or future gigabit network: The municipality has a sub-area that is or will be expanded to be gigabit-capable with the exception of a few eligible address points.
Low civil engineering costs: The remaining eligible addresses can be fully developed with just a few kilometers of civil engineering.
Maximum project costs: The maximum total project costs are 500,000 euros.
The gap closure area is defined by the total project expenditure. The total expenditure of the grant recipient for the expansion of the area may not exceed EUR 500,000 per project. An application in the gap closure program excludes an application from the same municipality in 2024 in the standard or fast lane call (and vice versa).
In the 2024 call, a municipality can therefore either submit an application in the gap closure program or as part of the standard or fast lane call. The pilot program is initially limited to 100 applications nationwide; the date on which applications are received is decisive.
